| Original Song Title: | "Paint Me a Birmingham" |
| Original Performer: | Tracy Lawrence |
| Parody Song Title: | "Paint Me at Burning Man" |
| Parody Written by: | A Room Full Of Monkeys |
The annual Burning Man festival is held the week preceding Labor Day in the middle of freaking nowhere (aka Nevada's Black Rock Desert), drawing tens of thousands of artists, partyers, and free spirits. The dress code is famously flexible.
I was sittin' there
My drink in hand
Shaking out - from my ears - the desert sand
When she approached
A sun-drenched beaut
In just an army helmet - and matching combat boots
She asked me if I'd ever worked with body art
I said I'm Leonardo - and how soon do I start?
She said Paint me at Burning Man
Make me look like a hippie van
A zillion stars from my head to toes
That's all I'm gonna wear for clothes
When you're done could you grab these strings
Help me tie on my - fairy wings
I'm so tired of this farmer taaaan
So you could paint me at Burning Man?
I did my job
Oh it was tough
But out here on the playa life gets pretty rough
She twirled away
Still fairly damp
And swore she'd win the fashion show at Center Camp
I thought, well, that's where this story ends
Till my artwork reappeared with all her friends
They said Paint me at Burning Man
Like if Warhol did Spiderman
My arms and legs need some turquoise hearts
Pink spirals on them other parts
Dig my mud-covered masquerade
Wash me down for the - bike parade
Yeah, my canvas is pretty graaaand
So honey, paint me at Burning Man
[Throbbing beat. Volume and tempo increase 20x.]
Paint me at Burning Man
Like a bad trip at Disneyland
Then take me dancing at 3 AM
One-hundred-twenty BPM
Gonna light up fluorescently
Don't you feel something? Yes-sir-E!
Haven't slept since the week begaaaan
So baby, paint me at Burning Man
[Winding down for sunrise. Or not.]
Dude, paint me at Burning Maaaan.

Mighty Spaff, this is a very sweet parody...it has a lively innocence that is absolutely delightful. Reminds me of when my wife and I and some other folks hiked to the summit of Mount Adams in New Hampshire to chant and meditate as the sun rose on The Harmonic Convergence in August of 1987. No, we weren't nude or wearing body paint, but that experience had the same playful spirit that I suspect abounds at Burning Man. :-)
I know about the Burning Man thing and this song-- I heard it this morning and thought to myself, Tracy Lawrence sounds like he bent over backwards to sound like a hick.
Funny shit yo.
When this was written, I wondered who, if anyone, would actually be familiar with both Burning Man and "Birmingham." The answer: Royce Miller! Woo-hoo!
Thanx also to Johnny D for your characteristically kind, empathetic comment, and to Frankie, for your characteristically expletive-laced one.
This year's event drew a record 35,664 participants. The man burns in 360 days!

So...I just decided to check this out...for no particular reason...and have to admit that it made me smile. I, personally, am SO over stars from head to toes, though...I prefer daisies...if you really need to know.
A-ha! Daisies! I shoulda known that was you, Arwen. Parody Writers' Photo Thread, here we come....
How could I let a Room Full Monkets parody by Spaff go without a comment form me for two years? Hmm Great job! 555!
How could I let a comment from Jack Wilson go without a thank you from me for two months? Hmm Thanks!
