The Lyrics

Sambo's was a popular restaurant from 1957-82 located in 47 states. By 1979, there were 1179 locations. The name came from the founders: SAM Battistone and Newell BOhnett, but Black people associated it with a racist book "The Story of the Little Black Sambo." They changed decor several times and gave name changes in areas that refused to grant them permits as Sambo's. They even had a kid's club- the Tiger Club. But by 1982 they faced bankruptcy and many locations became Seasons or Denny's restaurants. The original location in Santa Barbara is still open and serves breakfast all day plus lunch. They close at 2:30 pm. I miss the old restaurant and decor. Lots of tigers and the "Tree friend!"

We had a Sambo's a few blocks from my house growing up. I loved it! Had a kid wearing a turban and a jungle theme with animals. I never thought any of it was racist. I thought it was a kid's fun place. Mine sold plastic toy tigers and tiger masks we're free for kids. Yes, I too miss Sambo's! 5s
