Messageboard is going to be down for a couple days. I suspect it's the cause of the problems with the server. Read the comments on this thread to keep up with developments.

Most of the messages are still intact. If the server is able to go more than 2 hours without crashing with the board disabled, I will not be turning the old board on. I will instead try and move towards getting the new board off the ground. That won't happen until Sunday at the earliest however.
N.O.I.P. - April 15, 2004 - Report this comment
Oh, thanks for the info, Chucky!
Joe - April 15, 2004 - Report this comment
So does this mean there will be no messageboard until Saturday (or Sunday)?
Agrimorfee - April 15, 2004 - Report this comment
Sheet, thanks for the notice, I was going nuts here trying to figure out WTF was going on! ^_^
ChuckyG - April 15, 2004 - Report this comment
unless something else is causing the problems with the server, this means the messageboard probably won't return until Sunday, or possibly even later.
John Jenkins - April 15, 2004 - Report this comment
Ethan - Don't close the voting for the B parodies yet. I was going to vote today, and now it looks like I (and probably some others) won't be able to vote until Sunday. You might want to let the voting stay open at least 24 hours past the time that the Messageboard gets restored.
Mari D - April 15, 2004 - Report this comment
Ethan: Does that work for the "C" entries, too?
neminem - April 15, 2004 - Report this comment
Yeah, I was trying to figure out what was going on as well.
Joe - April 15, 2004 - Report this comment
Thanks. I'll make a note not to try going there the next few days.

I don't use the message boards, but for a while it took my server a long time to get to Am I Right.
Joe - April 15, 2004 - Report this comment
Same here, YWN. In fact, lots of times this week it's been taking forever to access the site. I hate when that happens.
Adagio - April 15, 2004 - Report this comment
Thanks for the notice. I really thought I had done something weird to my computer!
ethan - April 15, 2004 - Report this comment
i think because of the messageboard being down we can push everything back a week for the contest
Paul Robinson - April 15, 2004 - Report this comment
FYI - I have been encountering similar problems accessing the site this week. Thanks for the heads-up.

Thanks for clearing that up, Chucky. I thought that it was the computers I was using. I apologize to anyone trying to answer the Quizzes, Hanging Chads and Penguin Board Games, as well as the others. I'll be back Sunday. :D

if you want a rough preview: http://www.onlyonfilm.com/index.php this is a test version of the latest version of the software I plan on using. You can't create a user account yet (since email is not running on this server yet) but you can at least post messages as guests.
Phil Alexander - April 16, 2004 - Report this comment
Has a very familiar feel to it, even though it looks a bit different: it this from the same YABB developers?
ChuckyG - April 16, 2004 - Report this comment
yes, it's the same people. They actually created a new version a couple years ago called YaBBse, which used PHP and mySQL. They then decided to ditch the name and create an even more advanced system. Unfortunately, it's been in beta for six months (and it took them almost two years to get to that point). Fortunately, it's pretty stable and there's people already using it. I actually paid to get it early and then never got it set up. Now it's free (which I knew it would be eventually), and the bugs are getting worked out even faster.

I updated the archive of the messageboard, this won't be changing again until I figure out a way to archive the new board. http://www.inthe00s.com/archive/

The other thing is that amiright seems to be running quicker, too: was the old messageboard really that much of a resource hog?
ChuckyG - April 16, 2004 - Report this comment
The old messageboard was an intense resource hog, and it was buggy. It began creating zombie processes and creating segmentation faults, which ended up slowing the machine down. At first I thought it was a bad memory chip, but when the system stopped crashing with the site disabled, I knew the truth. Plus a memtest turned up no errors, so it was unlikely to be the server itself.

The new messageboard uses PHP and mySQL which is a much more reliable and faster method than Perl CGI and flat ASCII text files. It'll also be on an entirely different server, so if amiright and inthe80s isn't responding, inthe00s should be and vice versa. I'm also going to setup watchdogs between the servers to monitor uptime and reduce server outages.
Phil Alexander - April 16, 2004 - Report this comment
Flatfile ASCII? We surely can't be talking one file per thread, so one file per forum? They must have got massive...
ChuckyG - April 16, 2004 - Report this comment
One file per forum, but also one file per thread for data about the messages... like I said, a slow messy piece of junk. Fine when the site was getting a hundred or two hundred posts a day, but past that forget it. You have to remember, when I made the switch from the last software package I ran, I was only getting 20-30 posts a day tops. So the software appeared to be overkill for the job. The other options available all required annual support contracts and were expensive and not easily modified. I'm glad I waited for this package to be released (I've been waiting for this particular version to stabilze for almost a year), I just wish I could have put it off another month so I could spend more time testing it before it needed to go live.

Hey, Chucky, how come you haven't updated the site today? I'm eager to get my parody online!
nally - April 16, 2004 - Report this comment
Oh what a bummer! Thanks for letting us know, Chucky! I didn't visit the site at all yesterday, so I don't know what was going on. And on Wednesday I posted a list of songs in the "ratings" forum and was going to post my ratings, but I guess I can't do that now. :( But I do have it backed up on my disk, so I can re-post it if I have to.

Anyway, thanks again Chucky, for the info about the Messageboard.

While we're at it, why isn't there a link to Voting Results on the left panel anymore? Where'd it go?

IceScream: The "Voting Results" link was removed from the left sidebar because Chucky G removed the top 10 voting lists not too long ago.

I have the Decades message board bookmarked on my "favorites." Will I need to re-add it when it goes back online?
ChuckyG - April 18, 2004 - Report this comment
yes, you will need to change your bookmarks if it has the letters YABB in there somewhere. The bad news is that I spent the entire day trying to get the email working on the server, and got nowhere. My friend is going to try a different solution tomorrow (since it appears qmail is impossible to get working). I'm not sure when the new messageboard will be in place as a result
MaxwellSmart - April 19, 2004 - Report this comment
Thanks, Chucky. So you'll notify us on this message board when the Decades board is up and running? Best of luck, Max
ChuckyG - April 19, 2004 - Report this comment
yup, I will post a new topic when it's ready... and I'll make sure there's a message on inthe80s and my other sites as well.

Happy Birthday, Marian! Sorry I couldn't make up the big banner because of messageboard maitenance. And sorry to everyone expecting me to update the misheard lyrics and other threads because I cannot get to the queues because I have the URLs in the PMs. Cutting and pasting the URL to my browser simply does not work on my PC. I will try to update as soon as inthe00s is back up. Thanks for your patience.

I see that the messageboard is down again (if not fully defunct), which would also explain why the last update to Amiright was last Saturday. I hope the problem(s) get(s) fixed soon.
nally - September 23, 2004 - Report this comment
I notice it too. I think part of the problem is the fact that Chucky isn't around. When he gets back, hopefully he'll be able to restore things.
nally - April 12, 2006 - Report this comment
Hiya Chuck. I was trying to find a comment thread on here about the messageboard, and after googling I found this one. So I just got another SMF message about ten minutes ago (8:10 PM Pacific time...which is 11:10 PM your time)...and I'm not sure how long it's gonna last. I suspect it's only temporary...but when this happens, you never know many hours it's likely to last.

Here is the message you get when you try to click on the messageboard:

If you are seeing this message, it's because you aren't seeing the site at it's new location yet.

Try hitting refresh in your browser, or try again a few hours. It takes a little while for the new address to be found at some ISPs.

If you are not afraid to modify a file on your computer, you can speed up the process by adding the following two lines to the hosts file:

72.232.202.122 inthe00s.com

72.232.202.122 www.inthe00s.com

the hosts file is in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc and can be edited with notepad.

I was able to get at least the first page - now I can't. Everytime I try to bring it up, I get either a server not avalaible or error page. Seems like years since I was there.

Now I seem to get a "500 internal server error" when I click on anything. Let's hope that's only temporary.
