Spike Lee thinks rap music, especially gangsta rap, is portraying black people in a negative light. I think his failed lawsuit against Spike TV portrays trademark law in a negative light.

One question for Mr. Lee: Just who is it that makes rap music?

I agree with Spike on this one. Too bad he's not doing anything to stop it, since it is predominently blacks that profit from it.

Of course it doesn't. it portrays real life situations and the need to change the world through music and beats that these people hold close to their hearts. True rap is created by black people to express themselves and their opinions. The rap we hear on the radio is created to make people who know nothing of the genre money. There is a difference and you should acknowledge that.

It is not predominantly blacks that profit from rap music, especially if you are talking about money. Rap is a genre of what? Music. White people control the music industry. Yes black artists are predominantly those who make up the genre but behind the scenes there are tons of white people who profit from rap music much more. Artists make much less than those in control of a label, i.e.: those responsible for distributing and marketing rap music. Those who are most likely to purchase an album are middle class suburban youth (mostly white). A majority of musicians are puppets manipulated to conform to a certain stereotype. And it is often found that in popular rap music (that which is played on the radio) most artists are conforming to the stereotype that portrays young black men as violent, ignorant, materialistic, womanizing, socially inept beasts. And I do not say this to generalize because that is not true of all rap music that gets radio play, but the ratio of crap to art that you hear on the radio is overwhelming. And to say that all rap portrays real life situations is not true. A number of artists have been known to fabricate or exaggerate where it is they come from or the experiences they have had in order to sound "real" which is currently the new marketing fad. And there is a key element that needs to be addressed when addressing the realities of rap music. Why is it that so often rap artists glorifies the violence and drugs that suck their communities dry? They become artists to better their lives and situation, why is it then that they turn around and glorify the same hardships that they were trying to escape? Yes rap music brings to light the everyday occurrences in so many black communities, but how can it inspire others to want to change it when the artists are embracing it? If those who put it out there aren't saying that a change needs to be made, but rather I sold drugs 'cause I had to and used that money to buy a glock, shoot this nigga, and trick on my bitch.... how can you expect listeners who aren't from those places to see past that?

NO I DO NOT AGREE WITH HIM. RAP MUSIC DOESNT MAKE PEOPLE DO STUPID THINGS. LIKE IF SOMEONE SHOT SOMEONE BECAUSE THEY WAS LISTENING TO RAP MUISC, TELL ME DID THE MUSIC OR THE RAPPER PULL THE TRIGGER ? NO THE PERSON THAT SHOT THE OTHER PERSON DID.

Rap music is mostly talentless men bopping about. It also degrades women in videos, which as a man, i like the videos but they still degrade women all the same. Also rappers, most of them tending to be black, go round toting pistols and other shit like that which then influences black people to do the same which puts everyone at risk. Also, gangsta rap potrays all that gangster and gang shit to be cool when it really isnt. The clothes worn by rappers also isnt very intelligent, because rappers wear such heavy hoodys and jerseys it makes young boys nowadays think its cool when it damn well aint. Its bloody 100 faranheit outside and you see all these boys walkin around in these heavy jerseys when your in a pair of shorts. Arent they hot or are they just to thick to notice? I think the second answer is correct! Goin back to the point of gangs. Gangs you see on street corners really intimidate a lot of people and they also make themselves look like idiots. Personally rap music is alright. For example TuPac is good because he expresses himself through his music. Nowadays is different. Rappers just go on and on about dere bicthes and shit like that. It aint nice! If u wanna rap, rap with emotion not about fake gun toting, bitch bangin crap!

I think rap music does have an impact on not just blacks but any race that can relate to what the person is saying. Of course we are not saying that the rapper who talked about "shoot that nigga" was saying to the listener go out there and shoot that nigga. For that i say where were the parents but at the same time the rapper might as well had said it. They had an affect on it because they might be looked at as role models. They may not have been there to pull the trigger but they gave them them the push they needed. If they came from a rough neighborhood and talked about what they did and why they did it then make sure to explain how they don't want no one else to live this way. It to me is not protraying black in a negative way it is showing where we came from and it is their way to get someone in a higher place attention to show they care and want to do something about it. It is the only way young people out there will listen to the hurt that most of these black artist have experienced in their lives saying that they have been where they are now. But yes i don't agree with alot of how they say it but they are saying it the best way they know how they just need to know that when they came into this type of business that these young people are following them every step of the way.
