Metallica now owns two chords, E and F.. they've been using them, so now you can't. They don't know any other chords, so feel free to use the others.

I have read the article. And no Lars, I do not see it from your point of view. I was a little on your side about Napster, but now they want to control common chords in music. What next? Are you going to sue churches for using "The Metallica Chords" in the hymns? Oh, the blasphemy! ::)
Billy Florio - July 16, 2003 - Report this comment
Well, I hate the F chord, so i dont care about that, but they can't have E! I use E too much!
Hoeveel - July 16, 2003 - Report this comment
'I use E too much! ' Me too, i hear it causes brain damage too, but dance music sounds crap without Ecstacy. :/
Hoeveel - July 16, 2003 - Report this comment
LOL, i thought you might have exaggerated a little for your explanation but no. Metallica are unbelieveable, literally. Well, if they want to sue on them grounds then they are doing it in the right country LOL *shakes his head*

Unfortunatly, i believe this may be a hoax.... check the url in your adress bar--- the site LOOKS like mtv.com, but it's not. It's some obscure site, and when there is a page that LOOKS like a good webpage but comes from an obscure site, there's a very good change it's a hoax. Sorry!
Hoeveel - July 16, 2003 - Report this comment
Yeah, i did wonder why it was on ScoopThis if it was an MTV article and the number of underscores in the htm file's name was a bit...unprofessional. But i'm just a bit dense anyway :Þ
FuNkY mOnKeY - July 16, 2003 - Report this comment
WHAT?!? That is the stupidest thing...ever!! *strums F chord* Oh sorry guys, I used your chord. I'm so sorry. *strums E chord* Oh did I do that? Silly me. It's your special chord, so I can't use it. PLEASE. "People have come to associate the E and F chords with our music." So are we to assume that people sit there listening to music, and as they do are thinking, "That's a C chord...B chord...D chord...B...C...A...G..." I don't think that THAT many people are even going to be able to recognize this chord and that chord. Why freak out? Honestly.
Ghetto John - July 16, 2003 - Report this comment
Ok, if metallica wins this suit then its like the end of independent music. There is no way for them to own the chords or the order. They can own a song, but at some point some one is always going to end up using the same chords as someone else. I have a few songs that have the same chords as Staind, but their played different and sound different, so these rock but they are retarded.

yup, looks fake.. I saw it on another site, and followed the link.. so I'm not the only one who got fooled.. I guess it's too easy to believe Metallica would do this.
Learn English! - July 17, 2003 - Report this comment
This is obviously fake. The grammar is all wrong. If this were on MTV or some reputable site, the opening line would be, "Metallica is suing..." not "Metallica are suing..." There are other very obvious grammatical mistakes that a real reporter would never make.
Hoeveel - July 17, 2003 - Report this comment
Actually, it's acceptable to refer to a band or a company as a single entity or as a group of individuals.
Learn English! - July 17, 2003 - Report this comment
Actually, it is not. The name of the band is a singular noun. The members of the band would be plural. Had they said, "The members of Metallica, " then they could use "are." Since they chose to use the group name alone, they should have used "is."
Hoeveel - July 17, 2003 - Report this comment
Look, (listen and? ::) ) Learn, you are American, right? You're supposed to be intimidated by me using big words and back down from your argument OK? Besides, i've seen them say so-and-so a company 'are' doing such-and-such in the Guardian plenty of times.
Learn English! - July 17, 2003 - Report this comment
Hey, Hoeveel...I am American. Allow me to be as grammatically correct as possible when I say, "Bite me." :) As an American, I am not easily intimidated. Also, seeing as I have been teaching English for the past 15 years, I have an extremely firm grasp on the subject. If you read that a company "are" doing anything, I urge you to place the literature in the nearest trash receptacle. If you read that the employees of said company "are" doing something, then by all means, keep reading!
Hoeveel - July 17, 2003 - Report this comment
But when you are talking about reputability, you can't get much more reputable than the Guardian. You realise, the impact of the statement in your fourth sentence was lessened greatly by the concession in your first. Let's not even touch on your 3rd sentence.

Yeah, its fake and the MTV icon doesnt even change colors. On the real site it changes colors. Personally, I believed this at first, but then i was outraged when i found out it was fake LOL , because i hate LARS and metallica and I was really looking forward to ' flap my lip' if I may say. LOL. Anyways, about the napster thing....i think that was all a bunch of BS anyways. I mean what gives them the right to tell me ( the buyer ) what I can and can not do with their cd's and music that I legally buy? If I want to share it with my best friend, then I freakin will. If my friend wants to borrow my metallica cd ( which ive never owned one in the first place ) then thats up to me, and not up to some stupid rich band who thinks their 'GOD' and gets all pissed off when they think of all the ways they COULD be making money off their music. It's freakin ridiculous and childish. LARS is uh freakin idiot. If i want to burn their music on seperate cd, I freakin will, I dont care what band you are. And if i wanna share that with a friend and send in an email or whatever, I freakin will. I HAVE THAT RIGHT. Metallica's copyright goes with their music. The music they have composed, to protect them from other people passing along their music as their own, and NOT copyrighting and infringing on others rights. LARS can kiss my plain pale white ***. If its more money metallica needs, then why dont they go off and sell their freakin cars, your luxurious homes, and make more stupid shows on MTV??? Sounds like uh plan to me, but dont go INFRINGING ON MY FREAKIN RIGHTS YOU SELF PROCLAIMED IDIOT.

I really like Metallica, and I'm not sure whether to believe this story or not. It's pretty off-the-wall, even for Lars.
qwerty - July 19, 2003 - Report this comment
What I meant to say is that the story on cnn.com is stating that the story about Metallica suing over two chords is completely false, and also explains that it spread like wildfire over the internet. So, don't believe everything you read, especially if it's not a true news site. I, too was fooled by the False story about Metallica because they are the type that will sue over anything, they blame piracy for them not selling many albums, when in fact, not many people really like them today. People today prefer country & Pop Rock cookie cutter bands like The Chixie er, I mean the Dixie Chicks, not too much different from Destiny's Child, N-Sync, Britney Spears, etc.
GovernmentCheese - July 20, 2003 - Report this comment
Here. This link verifies that it was a prank concocted by the very lead singer of the Canadian rock band that was supposedly being sued. http://www.eonline.com/News/Items/0,1,12177,00.html I thought it was funny and appropriate as hell, however.

As for this “Speak English!” Guy ---- C’mon dude ( http://www.winternet.com/~mikelr/flame43.html ). That sounded like an opportunity to plug your credentials to people who wouldn’t have otherwise been concerned with what you did for a living. A person could have altered the address bar to see just what kind of site www.scopethis.com was or better yet, find other reports of the so-called story. The idea that grammatical structure undeniably determined it was fake sounds so contrived. What are people to make of “reputable sources” (internet or print) that DO commit grammatical errors? I hope they won't assume their stories are fake too.

Learn English! - actually, mtv have made this little booboo before. Just searching for 'Metallica' shows that - *gasp* - they said 'Metallica were' not 'Metallica was' and 'Metallica have' not 'Metallica has'. Check out http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1472853/20030618/metallica.jhtml Perhaps it's not grammatically correct, but it's a ridiculously obscure piece of grammatical incorrectness - strikes me more as being pedantic for the sake of it. You teach English - and? Save your protests for such crimes as 'hypocracy', 'definate' and 'barbeque'.

Why is it I always become aware of such grammatically charged debates after all of the bests volleys have been executed?! I would have oved to exercise my vernacular...ah, who am I kiddin'? Yo, Metallica has lost major cool points with me. You know what's gonna happen next? God is gonna sue all the bottled water manufacturers. I mean, after all...water was his concept, wasn't it?

Oh, my! Aren't we all in a tizzy now that grammar has been critiqued? I am entitled to post any information that I see fit and that includes matters of opinion. If Hoeveel, the person with whom I had been exchanging posts, had asked how I could be so sure of the article’s grammatical errors and I had then stated my profession, would I still be "plugging my credentials?" Are you all angry because you were gullible enough to believe the article? Are you frustrated because you had to grab a dictionary and thesaurus to find big words to shoot back at me? Ooh, “pedantic.” Wow, “contrived.” I… I… I can’t continue…words too big…have been put in my place…the pain… the horror. Get over it! I speak (type) my mind. Don’t like it? “Bite me.”

I have to give them credit on this new album. It dabeaud not in aww but while a number of there fan's were in blue. I mean the load (of crap albums) and the loss of allegiance by one of there own. This album is different, vocally I don't know what the [F-EXPLICIT-k] he was trying to do, but intalectually the plan it suiths. For year'sand Ions rockers have tried to get a "Tribal Sound" to there music, be it native or other, But these cat's are definateley on the rite track, if they can progress. There's been a lot holding them back amd it's not just Lar's drinking , but from introspect, they need reborne and I think the new member of the band might of brought some of that but they nned to bite into that more.
