It'll probably be as good as Dolly Parton's "Stairway", but that's not saying much. What if Black Sabbath covered "Here You Come Again"?

Only if Ozzy Osbourne covers "I Will Always Love You." But then, what are the odds of Kelly recording "9 to 5"? It seems the only thing she works hard at is hating Christina Aguilera. (Fill in your own punchline.)

Hey,somebody is going to cover the Weird Al Yankovic song,"The Saga Begins"...and it's either Metallica or Blink 182. It's been three years since Madonna has stolen the song "American Pie".

Here's a question for good old Mariah: Why is she covering the song that she calls "Bringin' On The Heartache" (one of her favorites? HA!) when the actual song is called Bringin' On The Heartbreak? Yeah, and I'm going to go cover "I'm A Gettin' It"

Which brings us back to Alien Ant Farm. It is rare that a cover tune like "Smooth Criminal" comes close to duplicating the success of the original, let alone improve on it. I would put AAF, along with Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" and Run-DMC's "Walk This Way" among those. (Though some might disagree). But think about it, if we've learned anything from Pat Boone rehashing metal tunes, it hasn't shown in the teen-pop genre.

wow Matt, I'm a big 80s fanatic, and I didn't even catch that.. guess it's been awhile since I pulled that album out (I only have it on vinyl still)..
Jeff Reuben - July 03, 2003 - Report this comment
Someone sang Tainted Love before Soft Cell? I knew there was a remake in the last few years, but didn't know someone did it earlier than Soft Cell (in the 80s)
Billy Florio - July 03, 2003 - Report this comment
yeah Jeff...it is a cover....but the artist is slipping my mind right now...I want to say Grace Jones, but i know that isnt right...damn.....anyway, AAF's version of Smooth Criminal is surprisingly good...I was shocked when I heard a good song from them....

I believe someone mentioned it was Gloria Jones, from the 60s.

Hearing Mariah say; "Gunter glieben glauchen globen" would be worth the price of admission. ( ;

I just about puked when I heard that! seriously! She wouldn't know a Def Leppard song if it bit her in the butt! What's next? Julie Andrews covering "Enter Sandman?" If ANYONE should cover Def Leppard, it should be another ROCK band, not a ditzy pop diva!
Julie Andrews - July 20, 2003 - Report this comment
My dear, dear Cheryl. Dare I say that I happen to do a lovely version of "For Whom The Bell Tolls". And my "Creeping Death" would make the Queen flush with envy.

You know what they say, Julie: A royal flush beats any other hand.

I think that Mariah took a nobody song and made it good. If Def Leppard couldn't make their own song big, then somebody else did. It's just ike Eminem covering Aerosmith's "Sing for the moment". He made it good. So did Mariah. And all of you are just jealous because you couldn't sing just like Mariah. And she changed the old, stupid title and made it into a smart, brand-new title with some spunk. Don't hate on people that you don't kn

No, no, no, Valerie. I'm not jealous because I can't SING like Mariah. (Although, let's face it, I can't.) I'm jealous because, when she needed to "recuperate," she didn't come to my house to do it. (Hey, she's a lot closer to my age than Britney, Christina, Alicia, Avril, et al. -- not that I'd touch the first two with a ten-foot pole!)

Valerie, u r a know-nuthing child. Bringin on the heartbreak by def leppard actually was a hit and it still has regular airplay on rock stations. Also, The only good part of eminems sing for the moment is the choruses where there is singing, and thats steven tyler (the singer from aerosmith, because I bet u didnt know that) singing it. How can u say he improved on a classic like dream on?? Thats sacrilege. Having said that, I actually do like what mariah carey did with def leppards song, although I still like def leppards version better. And who cares if I dont sing like mariah, or neither does def leppard (although they are great singers in their own right) because do u really need to go up 50 octaves like she does in the last chorus?? Wow, she can do that, however it woulda sounded better at a more normal octave....
Moe - August 06, 2003 - Report this comment
Oh yeah, I also forgot to mention that she actually does say "Bringin on the heartbreak" in the actual song!! Gave it a lil more spunk?? made it into a smart brand new title?? puhlease, a retarded monkey could change heartache into heartbreak and vice versa anyday. "dont hate on ppl that u dont know"??? maybe u should listen to ur own advice. Musical ignoramuses like u make me sick

You people really need to get a life! So we all have a different taste as it comes to music. I have always admired Mariah's singing skills and love her version of the song, but I also realize that some people don't. So what's the big deal? No reason to go around hating...

Ooh yeah, that would be the same thrill as hearing Chris Rea singing "My Way".

Mariah is a industry manfactured crack whore who hasn`t got a billionth of the tallent of any member of leapoard (including the hero that is the drummer) the only thing she`s got goin for her is nice tat`s

maverck, if you haven't noticed mariah carey is the biggest selling female of the ninties which shows that if so many people like her she must have some talent. I like mairah carey's version of def lepards song and if you like def lepard so much inclusing that hero of a drummer maybe you should learn to spell their name.

btw i know i spelt it wrong too but at least it's better than yours

Just because sales are high, it doesn't mean that talent is high. That's an urban legend. I have met many extremely talented, unknown musicians who (a) didn't get the breaks, (b) didn't know how to market themselves and/or didn't have someone who could do it for them, or (c) were not interested in selling out and going the commercial route. Oh, and of course there's (d) they had drug or mental problems that interferred with their careers. Oh, wait... Her success is largely due to great marketing! However Mariah sings some unusually high notes -- great for sales! My two cents: I don't care whose songs she covers; I don't like her or her music, but that's just my opinion; I like Def Leppard, who must have given permission for her to cover their songs.

I think it is great that someone who is known for thier RB flavor like Mariah decided to do a rock cover. She sounds great on it there is no question. You could have Mariah sing the alphabet song and it would be a hit. Truth is she is one of the most talented singers to come around in a while, and if you cant see that, you are ignorant. Love her or hate her, shes got unbelievable talent and there is no question about it. She brought new light to an old song, and I think its great.

The cover kicks ass...and I'm not even that huge of a Mariah fan. I like some of her stuff...but I wouldn't defend something that sucked. I have a friend who WORSHIPS her and took me to her show this summer...which was my first exposure to the Heartbreak (she didn't change the title...I'm looking at the CD...I think the article is a typo) cover. It was awesome! Seriously...give the gal some credit...she's made some bad choices (Glitter)...she dresses like a whore...but good hell, she can sing. And Dave Navarro on guitar doesn't hurt the cause at all.
