Billy Joel, "Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway)"
Misheard Lyrics:
They all bought Cadillacs, and left their lawns grow.
Original Lyrics:
They all bought Cadillacs, and left there long ago.
Given that the song is about the destruction of New York City, the misheard lyric made some degree of sense. I had always interpreted the "left their lawns grow" line to mean that citizens of the city simply stopped caring about the upkeep of their properties. Letting their lawns grow wild instead of keeping them neatly mowed, so to speak.
