Traditional, "Yankee Doodle"
Misheard Lyrics:
Stuck a feather in his head and called it macaroni
Original Lyrics:
Stuck a feather in his hat and called it macaroni
The line "And called it macaroni" didn't make any sense to me, but they're not talking about elbow macaroni. According to Wikipedia.org, the term "macaroni" in the song "Yankee Doodle" refers to a wig called the Macaroni. This type of wig was an extreme fashion in the 1770s and became contemporary slang for foppishness. The Macaronis adopted feminine mannerisms, and the men were deemed 'effeminate.' Thus, the British were insinuating that the colonists were womanish and not very masculine.
