Frankie Laine, "Cry of the Wild Goose"
Misheard Lyrics:
Wild goose, brother goose, witch's vest.
Original Lyrics:
Wild goose, brother goose, which is best?
Whenever I see the lyrics to this song posted on the internet, they invariably claim the lyrics are: 'Wild goose, brother, which is best/A wand'ring fool or a heart at rest?' And that's the way I'd always heard the song as well .... But recently I've gotten the song on CD (three different versions of it -- each by Laine), and can say beyond any and all doubt that the correct phrase is 'A wand'ring FOOT or a heart at rest?' The final 't' is soft (Frankie concentrates on the vowels), but distinct in all three versions. Especially so when listened to with headphones. The 'heart'/'foot' metaphor is also much more poetically correct than than the mixed one of 'heart'/'fool.'
